Zinedine Zidane after recieving the red card

As you may already know France captain Zinedine Zidane was red-carded in the 110th minute of the World Cup final with the match against Italy tied 1-1. The game went to a penalty kick shootout after two scoreless overtimes.

Zidane, who was playing the last football match of his career, headbutted Italy defender Marco Materazzi in the chest after what appeared to be an exchange of words whilst walking down the pitch.

Why Zidane did this I will never know. What must have been going through his head? He is widely regarded as one of the finest football players of our generation and like Zidane or loath him it is sad that he will now not be remembered entirely for his footballing genius, nor for his contribution to the beautiful game, but for one moment of madness that will surly haunt him for the rest of his life.

Italy won 5-4 on penalty shootouts.

5-3 on penalty kicks :P But really...Zidane just stain an otherwise brilliant career...i'd like to see what he has to say once he calms down.

Congrats to Italy though, they didnt play the hardest, but they held on. And that second goal of their's, it WASN'T offsides. They showed the replay countless times, and if you look, the ball was ahead of the Italian player(s) who were just behind the France player(s)...marginal, but i truely dont believe it was offsides.

I can understand him completely. If I were him, I'd have punched that guy in the face. Grabbing shirts and pushing just slightly every 3 minutes gets on the nerves.

Italy didn't really deserve to win. France played slightly better than Italy. The penalty kick that France missed was just bad luck.

Didnt France score their goal off of a penalty kick? And what about the supposed offsides when Italy scored the second goal? Either way, EVERY player was grabbing and pushing, especially towards the end of regulation time. But to just blatantly do what he did...pathetic. He's the captain...:|

I can understand where Oliver is coming from - Italians are anoying! - but there really is no excuse whatsoever for that type of thuglike unprofessionalism. Makes me sick to my stomack to see a man on the verge of sealing a legendary career tarnish it that much in the final seconds.

In regards to the match itself Elessar I too thought France played a better match and deserved to win. However they didnt and hense I am today wearing my "Italia" T-shirt!

yep, no idea what zidane was thinking. i don't care what was said, or done - bad form. i agree - there really is no excuse whatsoever for that behaviour. sad that he went out like that.

i do agree that italy won on luck though - and i was actually supporting them.

    Steve,
Now that my days of mourning are over..thanks for the note you dropped me.

Zidane's gesture probably wasn't appropriate but by God, that animal Materazzi deserved it.
    Cheers
