Emo

Back in "the day" (before catching the web bug and coincidentally when I was still cool) knowing all the popular lingo used to come second nature; terms like trendy, mosher and chav... I knew 'em all. However times change and it seems I'm no longer the kool kat I once was.

Recently a new hip word has appeared on the scene that everyone seems to know of but me - Emo. What does this word mean? I looked it up on Google:

Emo (an abbreviation of "emotionally-driven Hardcore punk") is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional punk's limited emotional palette of alienation and rage. It is also used to describe fans of this genre, most commonly teenagers. (e.g., emo kid). The actual term "emo" originated in the mid-1980s D.C. scene, with the band Rites of Spring, as well as bands such as Fugazi, Moss Icon, and Antioch Arrow. - Google Definitions

Confident, I proudly exclaimed to my mates down the pub that Bryan Adams was, infact, Emo - after all it is rock music (kinda) and very, very emotional. The vindictive laugher is still ringing in my ears. Bastards.

@Dena: Nah, I used to be nu metal back in the day (the whole camo, studs, dog chains and Nirvana T-shirt) and with bands like Stained that was more steriotype 'wrist slashing' than Emo came across to me.
